Derek Landy's I-Scream Spectacular!*

* may not contain ice-cream.

Behold the awesome!

On April 5th, in London, as part of my tour, we are offering a day at the movies, where I will be discussing the many movie influences that have shaped my life and, more specifically, that have shaped the Demon Road trilogy.

We are breaking the day into two halves.

At 1 PM, younger readers, accompanied by an adult, can go to the Picturehouse Cinema in London and experience 80's comedy-horror classic GREMLINS on the big screen...! It'll be my first time seeing it up there too — I've only ever seen this film on TV, so I am HUGELY excited.

Desolation will be available to buy, I'll be doing a Q&A, and signing whatever you have. It's going to be FUN.

And then we'll be repeating the format at 8:30 that night, when we'll be showing the original A Nightmare on Elm Street to a STRICTLY over-18 crowd...!

Again, I was too young to see this in the movies when it came out, and as one of my all time favourite horrors, I can't wait to see this in all its glory.
Come! See Johnny Depp get blender-ised in his Bed of Death!
Naturally, anyone 18 or over can come to both movies and make a day of it — as I will be — but sadly the younger Minions can not savour the delights of Freddy Krueger — at least not until you're older...

Star Inkbright said...

Anyone ever think about how you don't need to really know the details of what happened, the comments here (and other places online) are always the same?
Some goes "my thoughts are with the victims of blahblahblah" abd then a few other people express their sympathies, and then it's all "I can't believe that people would do this" and then it's usually "We need to ban guns" or "We need to somehow get rid of ISIS," and then the subject gets dropped and nothing is done and we all forget about it until the next attack happens, at which point we all roll out the same party lines and have the same conversations.

By this point it all really feels a bit pointless to me, so I don't express my sympathies anymore. I mean, it's not like it'll do anything, and it's not like I actually care that much. I didn't know them, and I don't really do unprovoked caring very easily. I reckon half the people who express their sympathies are nice people who really care, and the other half just don't want to be assholes so they make themselves act lkke they care.

Noelle said...

I agree... No offense to anyone..
But thoughts are nice, but having sympathetic thoughts doesn't cause change.

Vivanus Keen said...

(I disagree. Maybe it's becase I like München. Maybe it's because I cam empathize with the victims because of similar age. Maybe because I think it's sad that anyone should feel the pain those families felt. But whatever it is, my heart goes out to them. And maybe it can lead to change. Maybe people will stop tormenting the Iranian in the classroom, talk to him, help him get past his troubles. Maybe someone will make a call to a counselor, to give someone the mental care they need. Maybe people will be more cautious, more careful. But I think that some change will happen because we took the time to care. )

Noelle said...

You're implying that we don't feel empathy?

I'm saying that simply feeling bad isn't going to solve anything. Action, not "positive vibes".

Noelle said...

And some change, yes.
But isolated change from the individual is not enough.. Increased legislation to protect against terror, peace treaties and multinational conversation needs to occur.

... i bought a computer game from Amazon... its made by the same people who made Skyrim and because Skyrim is omg beautiful and perfect I wanted to try it... I bought it and it arrived and it was the FRENCH version... I was so disappointed :( im returning it and theyll collect it on Monday... the worst part is they wont let me buy another copy... it says its for Amazon Prime members only... and thats upsetting... they messed up my order because the English version was advertised and then they wont let me get what WAS advertised because i dont pay money??? Thats just... no... im not shopping at Amazon again... a mistake is ok ill return the game no problem but telling me I have to subscribe to something to be able to get what i actually ordered is stupid!!! Im not spending money to be able to spend money!!! Its bad enough I get bombarded with ads about subscribing to it whenever i buy something but being told I cant get what I actually ordered and paid for because im not a subscriber IS stupid... im just not gonna buy from Amazon again :( its so upsetting im being told that i have to pay nearly 100 bucks a year to be able to buy what I could do before no problem... its like theyre saying 'because you dont wanna pay a $100 annual subscription you now cant buy what you want because youre not paying to buy things'... im not a rich person and $100 is a lot of money to me and I just want the game I ordered as it was advertised!! If computer games are anything like dvds it would be region locked also so I couldnt even play it if I wanted to!!! Stupid Amazon... just the other day I was telling Patricia how much I loved Amazon and then this happens!!!

Star Inkbright said...

Idk, it's just like . . . the first few times it feels like a real significant event, but after a certain number of shootings etc. it's just like . . . there's nothing exceptional about it. The world isn't significantly changed by it.
I wish that, like in fiction, they were significant events and things were changed after them . . . idk, it's like if people are going to be killed, the world may as well be made a better place because of it. But alas, usually, the impact is pretty much nothing. We never usually seem to learn from it or better ourselves because of it. There's still way too many guns in America, mental health treatment in both America and here is still shit, ISIS is still out there, etc.

Idk. Maybe I'm just saying all this because my natural disinclination to do what I view as "normal" pushed me to give a response other than the usual "My thoughts are with the victims."

The thing is with Amazon though is that it's CHEAP becausw it's evil and avoids taxes. My mum's tried to boycott Amazon in the past due to the lack of taxes, but she couldn't resist it due to the prices. :P

Yay for Hamilton! :)

And, @Lauren, just to let you know, you don't have to buy a years worth of Prime - you could get the monthly £7 version and just cancel after you've bought the game so you're only charged for a month (if you want to buy it from Amazon/Amazon is the only place that sells it, that is)

Also, with you mentioning mental health in America, Star - if anyone is interested in that topic and wants to read more about it, Pete Earley's 'Crazy' is the most incredible and harrowing book and I could not recommend it more. It's a personal yet factual account that highlights everything wrong with the system and follows the lives of a few people that have tried to get help either successfully or unsuccessfully (as the case is quite regularly). Would definitely recommend if anyone is interested!

Star Inkbright said...

@Flora: :) Thank you.

LaurenXIV said...

I didnt know that Flora :) but im still not gonna do it... im not paying because they sent me the game in the wrong language :( its $10.99 for us and 10 bucks is 10 bucks... if they dont want my money/want too much of it... im just not gonna give it to them... i saw a used copy of the game in a store but I chose Amazon because the copy was brand new and would come with the dlcs that I might not get with a used copy :( its cheaper anyway only $9.99 instead of the $19.99 i paid and the $10.99 on top... it would be just not worth it :( it would be cheaper to download the game from the Playstation Store I think :( if Amazon are telling me that my money isnt considered the same as other peoples now because I dont give them a monthly/yearly fee because theyre literally saying 'if you pay you can have it if you dont you cant' then they wont have my money :) their loss really ;) I can look elsewhere after all as ive said :)

LaurenXIV said...

Haha Star yes Amazon is cheap thats why I use it... if theyre making me pay more I dont have to support their tax evasion ;) prices are the only advantage that Amazon has... take them away and theres no reason to go there ;)

When I was little, I was real sad about the fact that when I got married I'd have to change my surname.

Now I'm older, I know that marriage is not necessarily guaranteed and regardless of whether I get married or not, I don't ever have to change my surname.

Thank you, feminism. :)

Awwwwww star haha thats so cute ;)

Im not sure I want to get married... but if I did id happily take the other womans name :) honestly being stood in front of everyone in a dress isnt my idea of fun :(

Your last name is pretty :) my last name is opel haha like the car ;)

... a joke my aunt says often is about one of our family joining the army and being a cadet... a pun on kadett which is a car made my opel ;) ... it isnt too funny haha... I think opel is a common last name :) I knew of 3 people in my school who had opel as a last name and all werent related to each other or me :) I like it as a last name but id prefer taking someones name if I got married because... its like marriage is kind of declaring your love for someone and saying you belong to each other and id like to belong to someone :)

... fairly sure thats the least feminist thing ive ever said but its balanced out by taking another womans last name right??? ;)

Star Inkbright said...

Personally I just don't like marriage as a concept much.

If someone ever wants to marry me I'd be like "ugh whyyyyy" but if I love them and it's really important to them I suppose I'd do it.

And IMO, it's not unfeminist if you want to belong to someone and it's your decision . . . it would be unfeminist if you were made a belonging of someone against your will. But then what do I know. :P

I've never met anyone with the last name Opel, but then we do live in different parts of the world. It's a nice name. :)

LaurenXIV said...

Oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god...

... like...

I dont even...

Ive got into 2 arguments with people on the other forum in a few days... like the first actual arguments ive ever been in... and ive kinda won both!!! :) the first was against a sexist guy and I made fun of him and then he said he had lots of terms for women so I said I had a term for him and called him a moron and he kinda shut up after that... this latest one just happened now and it was one of the jerks who were harassing me and I made fun of him also... one of my friends said how good their chat room was so I quoted her and edited her post so it said unless youre a new person as a joke and then he came and said some stuff accusing ME of being a troll so I pointed out that out of the 2 of us i wasnt the one banned for harassment and that I wasnt the one ACTING like a troll (I gave a list of things his group have done like impersonations, name calling, peer pressure, alternate accounts)... and gave him a hint that he shouldnt act like a troll while falsely accusing others of being the same and I said that hes too used to what his group does and he should mix with more people because it might help him see clearly ;)

... he never replied

LaurenXIV said...

(Sorry I never saw that ;))

Im not sure... I like marriage in theory but I couldnt do it with my anxiety i think :(

Haha same here :)

True ;) im happy to belong to someone :)

Awwww thank you and yes thats true :) your last name is pretty :)

(I wouldn't say it's antifeminist to say you want to belong to someone. It'd be antifeminist if you said all women should belong to someone else.)

Star Inkbright said...

@Lauren: Awesome!!!!! :) That's really great. :)
I love arguing but I suck at it, so I usually lose. XD

@Jai: Yes.
Bit like sex really. If you want it then good for you, but you shouldn't make everyone have it or force it on people.

(Sex-related consent concepts are so clear cut and widely agreed upon that I find that using sex as a metaphor can really help when clarifying things, which is a shame because often it's not appropriate or people get caught up on the "ooh you mentioned sex" and don't listen to your point. XD)

Noelle said...

You can be a feminist and still want to "belong" to someone. You can be a feminist and not want to get married. You can be a feminist and want to be a traditional housewife: dishes, no job, kids.
It isn't the intention of feminism to degrade traditional marriage, but to make it the norm that women have the choice to opt out of such norms if that isn't for them. It's about giving women the ability to fluidity of relationships that often can be confined to traditional marriage.

LaurenXIV said...

Haha im sure you dont suck at it star :)

Im the same star :) like when i make analogies i basically talk about sex food and computer games... i know lots about them so its easy for me to come up with things that fit :) like when we were talking about relationships on the other forum... i said that an emotional connection is like an rpg... its meaningful and beautiful and you can spend a lot of time with it/them... a physical attraction is more like a dlc... optional... its good if you have it but it doesnt matter if you dont because you can still enjoy the rpg just as much :) all it does is add more things to do ;)

Im happy to belong to someone :) im also happy to do all the chores... so basically traditional (if lesbian relationships can be called traditional)... but no kids please ;) im bad enough with flowers... its like a life or death situation ;) I also dont think id be a good mom with my head the way it is :)

Star Inkbright said...

I do suck at it a bit. But it's okay.

I can make analogies from lots of things, but the flipside of that is that they're often a bit weird and random. XD

Idk, I think you'd be a good mum.

LaurenXIV said...

There are worse things to suck at :) like breathing :) if you sucked at breathing then youd really be in trouble ;)

Haha yes thats the same with me :)

Awwww thank you but I dont think so :) its not exactly likely to happen anyway... I mean me and my partner would basically have 2 options either a donor or an adoption and im not sure id like either... id rather be pregnant than my partner because I have a super high pain tolerance and I wouldnt want to see them in pain under any circumstances... but pregnancy doesnt sound fun ;) but haha really i wouldnt be a good mom ;) im too... me... im either super happy or super sad and im not consistent...

Star Inkbright said...

I saw this on the internet once:

"I said to my mom "my only talent is breathing." She responded "you have asthma, doofus.""

XD

Imo pregnancy sounds awful. -_- It's like you're hindered for months by having this massive lump stuck to you, and then you have sickness and cravings abd all kinds of weird shit happening to your body, and like constant fear all the time in case you somehow damage your baby (I get real scared watching TV shows with heavily pregnant characters or babies because it's just so damn easy for the baby to die), and then at the end of it you get a ton of pain. :P

Nowadays they can actually produce a (female) child from two females, but that's probably suuuuper expensive. :P

Idk. You seem pretty nice, so I think you'd instil good values in your child if you had one. *nods*

LaurenXIV said...

Haha thats mean... but pretty funny ;)

Yes :( it really doesnt sound fun... my ex used to say things are supposed to go in there, not out ;)
Id rather go through it than my partner though personally :) but seriously have you actually read what pregnancy/having a baby does to your body??? ;) super weird!

... you can????? Dudddeee why did no one tell me this???? I mean like thats something i should know right???

Awwww thank you :) you seem nice also and im sure youd be a good mom if you uh want one/decide to have one :)

Jai (Silente Tempest - St Of Sinners) said...

(Star would be a good mum.
Unless she was playing a game with them. Then less so.)

LaurenXIV said...

Why a game haha???

Star Inkbright said...

@Lauren: I haven't read that much about pregnancy, but I can imagine it is weird.

I think I'd manage to maybe be an okay mom if I had someone to co-parent with. I'd be a terrible single mom. XD

@Jai: XD Yes.

LaurenXIV said...

Star.... apparently babies inside you pee like a liter a day and then drink it ;)

... so yes pretty weird

And I dont know if its true but apparently nipple stimulation can actually bring on labor

... pregnancy is just weird ;) like how does humanity survive really??? ;)

I think most single moms think that but most do well :)
